other big animals with one of the first S&W 8" 357 Magnums off the line way back when. The only thing I can say is the 357 Mag ammo must have been hotter than Hell's hinges back then. I have shot several deer with a Colt Python with what I considered a hot round back in the early 70s and they ran off in just about every case, even with a point of shoulder shot. After spending hours tracking the deer and putting them down I gave up on the 357 Magnum and stayed with my 30 Herrett and S&W 44 Magnum.
The 356 GNR, as Scotty said is a different story all together. I have taken Nilgai with it, one shot, cow Bison, one shot, Yak bull and a bunch of whitetail deer with one shot each. It is like a lightning strike on deer. The 180 grain 357 caliber silhouette bullet will equal the ballistics of the 180 grain 44 mag bullet. That is what I use almost exclusively in the 356 GNR.
