I’ve owned just one, a 30-30 carbine. In a weak moment of stupidity I traded it off to someone who really wanted it. Growing up a friend had a ‘99 in .250 Sav. It was an interesting counter to our other friend’s Remington auto in .243. The old Savage lever guns and even the odd rimmed American 8mm (.303 Savage) caliber were quite popular. Many photos depict explorers and adventurers showing full confidence in old photos, usually sporting taken critters. I think it a curious choice in icy weather but I guess I’m goofy. They are neat guns for a collection if you are careful to select one without splintered forends or a crack at the tang wood. But I kind of like them.
