He was interviewing an aged SOG Vietnam team leader. Really hardened old guy who rode the river. One segment about sidearms; he carried the .45 1911 at first, but noted its weight. He did mention “boy that really put a man down” 230 ball I assume. He also mentioned carrying the Hi-power with its notable increase in capacity. Due to his unique type of deployment what he favored most was a suppressed High-standard .22 LR! Head shots!

Back to the .45, if ball, 230 RN at 800 fps works well enough, why not the lighter target ammo at 900-1000 fps? Blake jacked up a special prepped .45 super with Norma 200 gr. FMJ Target bullet at 1400 fps. Shot a Javalina, I think it went all the way across the little tough critter to lodge under the off skin. The bullet was flat as a coin! I thought that was interesting. I bet at lower speed it would have fully penetrated.

I often find .38’s and .40 cast bullets deep into my sand drums. But high power magnums torn up at the front. It’s the poking a rod through sand vs punching it. Once my son and I discovered a .17HMR would not penetrate a water filled 2-liter bottle at 25 yds, but would easily at 100 yds. Only difference was the bullet at 25 yds. was traveling 2550 fps, at 100 yds. It slowed to 2150. Interesting!
