My go to load in .40 is a 200 gr. at 1000 fps

basically the old .38-40 load. The .40 S&W guns have a lot going for them for woods guns as they are on the smaller 9mm platforms, not .45.

In my personal testing the 10mm "factory" normal loads, not the fancy semi-custom loads, are at best 100-150 fps faster than the .40 in normal guns. This is the classic standard ammo, Win., Rem., Fed., plinking stuff. It depends on your bullet weight and the barrel length being compared. Having a 3.5" 10mm is a big waste! A 6" is a different animal.

Using published data and normal cast alloy 170-200 gr. bullets you can get 1000-1100 fps from a 4-5" .40 S&W perfectly safe. Ditto shooting cast 147-158 gr. 9mm's. Reloaders have it so good. Jacketed bullets usually drop it around 100 fps. Don't turn down a good .40 that you like. Sure it kicks a lot more than a 9mm, you've souped up the power considerably in the same gun. The chassis you choose is subjective. A tip however... A Glock .40 caliber can be converted to both .357 SIG and 9mm Luger by a simple barrel change. The aftermarket is rife with parts too. The M&P has a strong following and some parts too.
