The devil is in the details...

I guess nervous tension led me to once again tinker with the old M1910 Winchester. I am a little apprehensive about using powders slower than 2400 with a blow back action too. I will be looking for any bulges ahead of the web on the first few cases.

The cases were made from .414 SuperMag and dimensional are about perfect. I can use a LEE #2 shell holder perfectly, if by accident. Alas, I have not yet belly'd up and bought a $35 bullet sizer in .406" from Graf & Sons. It seems silly for 0.004" difference. I could size .401 and powder coat twice to bump up, nah that's silly too. My .410" bullets mic at 0.433 diameter overall inside the case. The old factory round shows .429", and LEE tumble lube 210 gr. unsized at 0.434". So I suppose the proper bullet diameter sizing would run loaded case diameter right at 0.430", very close indeed. All rounds chamber smoothly and fully. Bullet diameter and case thickness both combine and are factors.

Next is function testing and some chronograph work to see if I am heading in a positive direction. What a delight of a diversion.

Lookin good Scotty! Heard the 414 brass is the only way to g

One grain too much H110

No good data and I made some calculations. The SWC 210 ran 1875 fps and seemed good except for pretty flat primers. However a simple change of bullet design, to a Tumble Lube LEE 210 gr. caused mildly pierced primers, the gas ran around the extractor notch in the bolt face too and gas stained the cases. I noted some greater fps variations and speed was lower at 1800 fps avg. No harm but I know lots more than I did now. They shot accurately and no other case deformation. Primers were WLP Mag.

I'm dropping a grain, using rifle primers.

I tried H110 and it showed some promise but historically 2400 or 4227 is THE powder for .401 WSL. I think 1680 would do well too.

"mildly pierced"? That is sorta like barely pregnant

Unfortunately I have experienced actual BLOWN primers

there IS a difference. I think my oversize bullets for the bore and pistol primers in place of rifle caps caused this. I pulled the other test rounds, only a few. That's what testing is about. If it's enough to pop a pistol cap it's too hot for me. The other bullets did not exhibit the same trait.

If you can see in there it's a teeny pin hole. But quite a bit of gas bled out.
