Thoughts on a 450 Marlin?

Found one at a LGS awhile back and finally got around to shooting it Sunday. I’ve had the pleasure of shooting some big rifle cartridges in my past, including a .460 Weatherby, and have owned a .416Rigby and 375H&H in #1’s for a short time. But... that Marlin .450 was BRUTAL! It may have to find a new home! Had a bit of a problem with feeding so will have to work on that and make up some lighter handloads for it. I’ll see?

I had one and it was OK, brass getting little sparse

It is truly designed around that 300 gr. And does really well with them, feeds smooth. Trying some of those 400+ gr. And they are getting long for the internal capacity, which is less than the .45-70. That belt is really thick so you can’t accidentally slide it in say a .300 Win.! Good thinking on their part.

IT IS A .45-70 WITH A DIFFERENT HEAD. SO

THE RECOIL IS THE SAME. BOTH CAN BE BRUTAL. MINE WILL BE PASSED ON DOWN TO ONE OF THE GRANDKIDS.

Shot the Hornady 325gr Evolutions.

I can’t remember a .45-70 recoiling that much! Guess that’s why I handload. A fall and winter project, I guess!

Roughly a +p version of the 45-70, I enjoy the

45-70 in my 1895CB, I dont push it much faster than it needs to go, if the ol' black powder load could penetrate a horse or buffalo at 800-1000 yards, what more would you need?

Mine came with a box of 430 gr. Buffalo Bore

rated at 1900+ and by golly they did it. Firing a round would clap your shoulder blades! Lots of fun. I figured about as hot as the round could manage balancing the bullet weight and capacity. Would have been fine for a light to carry thumper.

I ONCE loaded 10 of the 350gr Speer sp up to

max in my #1. I don’t remember the load but it chrono’d at 2020fps. I pulled the other 9.

The maxed 460gr hardcast is even better..LOL

4198. The recoil was very stiff knocking my glasses up sideways. The gent on the bench next to me commented how “fun” that looked. I managed 7 shots and pulled the last 3 bullets. A heavy 45-70 flying 2K isn’t enjoyable. I’d probably want to willingly take it again if going after some in the field hoping adrenaline & the moment would offset the “fun”.

Send it to GNR for a master hunter conversion.
