So here are some of them..I grew up with the J.C. Higgins (Sears) rifles. First the model 29, then the model 31. A few years back I decided to go back in time and pick up the guns I grew up with so I found the model 29, 30 and 31, all made by High Standard for Sears. Like Blake said on here they are man size rifles, not the little rifles for kids.
The model 31, 30 and 29, top to bottom.
Another favorite a few years later was the Marlin 99M1, the size of the old M1 Carbine but extremely accurate. at the time I was working for a radio station in Nashville and writing a weekly column in a Nashville newspaper on guns and hunting called Southern Sportsman. There were a lot of special high velocity 22 LR coming out so I decided to do a test on them for the column. I had the Marlin 99M1, a Remington 541, the J.C. Higgins Model 29, a Remington model 581 and borrowed a Winchester Model 52 field model. I ran several brands of hyper velocity ammo thru them like the CCI Stinger, Winchester Expediter, Remington Yellow Jacket and one or two others that I can't think of now. At the end of the trial the little Marlin 99M1 beat them all. If you can find one today they usually run $350 or better in good shape.
I bought 2 or 3 of them for some silly ass reason.
A CZ 452 in 22 LR
A CZ 455 in 22 Magnum
A CZ 512 in 22 Mag
A Ruger 77-22 in 22 LR
A Ruger 77-22 in 22 Magnum
A Marlin Texan in 22 LR
A Remington 541-T in 22 LR
A Ruger 10-22 stainless
Winchester 9422M in 22 Magnum
and there are a couple more around somewhere. I tend to stash things around and forget where I put them.

I use to go to Palisade Amusement Park on the Jersey palisades and shoot the 22 pump rifles at the gallery. Wound up getting a Rossi 22 pump rifle that is an absolute joy to shoot....

My father's Remington 550 with non-grooved receiver. He sold the GRIT paper in the late 1940's and made enough to buy a Whizzer motorbike. He said it would go about 50 mph. Alas he ended up sliding it under a car. Not too banged up he decided it was not for him. He traded the Whizzer for the Remington, a squirrel dog, and $13 cash. The Remington remains in my possession to pass onto his grand kids.
I have a really nice Winchester M62A hammer pump. It's basically like the old guns I shot as a child at the fair. 3-shots to take all the star out at 10 ft. and you win a prize. 3-shots for a quarter, lots of money back then but my favorite at the county fair. That and the pneumatic machine guns that came later. The 62A has coil springs where the others earlier models had flat springs. It makes me happy.
I have one of the very first "Chipmunks" bolt single shot rifles they ever made. A fellow in Medford, OR was making them in his home shop, I have one. He used very exotic wood blanks and Shilen barrels. I bought it when I was 16 and swore to use it to teach my kids to shoot one day. That's exactly what I did.
Model 39. 4 digit serial number.

So many 22 rifles feel like a miniature rifle, which was great when you where a kid. This gun feels more like a mountain rifle. Like a 243 or a 7-08
more than a rimfire. And not picky about ammo, just a joy to shoot

Always wanted a 10/22 because I could get all the aftermarket support, but when it came time for my first rifle, dad wasn't as well informed as this youngster and didn't see the needed expense over the marlin 60. I grew fond of it, could hit a rabbits eye at 50 yds and headshots were the norm anywhere on our ten acres. Since then I have had many 10/22's come and go, but the Marlin still lingers safely in the safe, might get passed up on occasion, but is the go to when the shot counts.

Growing up it was a Stevens Favorite single shot. Now it is a Savage MKII TR, a 10/22, and a Single Six. That Savage is amazing.
BSA falling block, shoots better than I can.

in 1934 or 1936. A 5 shot detachable magazine. It wears an old Weaver K-4 and it is very accurate.
