a while back we got some guns that had been in a fire.

One was a series 70 Colt Gold Cup in 45. It was burned pretty bad and the holster was melted to the slide. The slide and entire gun was finished in a satin nickel finish which made it even harder to bring back to life. The owner thought it was a lost cause.I told the owner to let us see what we could do for it. Here is the gun as it came in to us, with the holster melted to the slide.

Even rifles can usually be restored. Here is a Winchester that was left in a wet soft case for a while.

Here is a Ruger 357 Magnum Blackhawk that had battery acid spilled on it.
Really nasty.

Just to show you that most guns can be restored, even when they are in really bad shape.

Very amazing that these guns have been brought back from —/

Good God Gary... you brought them back from the Gates of Hell.... My sincere congratulations on a job well done....

That kind of work would be deeply satisfying to me.

I like the Youtube videos of guys restoring rusted axes, knives, vices, jacks and other tools. Guns would be even better. My work is 'important' but doesn't have the longevity that Gary's projects do.

I do enjoy it

I had a fire-damaged Seville once

The grips were charred and the metal looked horrible. Took it to my gunsmith, who is a world-class custom 1911 builder. He looked at it about 5 seconds and told me it was okay. I was shocked and asked him how he could know so quickly. He said it was simple - the springs were still in good shape. He said had the gun gotten hot enough to damage the structural integrity of the frame and cylinder, it would have first destroyed the temper in the springs.

I wound up shooting that gun a lot. Nary a problem. And, I tucked away a little bit of knowledge for buying future, cheap project guns.

Wish I still had that Seville. I never had it refinished. If I still had it, I'd send it to Gary. :)

yep, if a spring gets too hot it collapses and some of the
