On the road this weekend, stopped at a LGS. They have a 57-1, 6" bbl, needs polishing and maybe rebluing. Comes with 4 boxes of factory ammo. They have it on consignment. Was thinking of offering $600 for the package if that sounds fair.
that is a fair price but it probably won't go

A package with 41 mag and 41 GNR cylinders. There's rust completely through the bluing on the 57's cylinder and frame in two spots about the size of a quarter. Figuring if I send it to you for Chromex and necessary accurizing work I'll be out another $600 or more.
better

The S&W 41 mag is a better N-frame cartridge then the 44 mag.

I don't know if I gave to much for mine but its an S-prefix which I guess are the early ones, 4 inch and I gave $900 for it about 2 years ago. These old Smith's just seem to stay kinda high these days who knows if it will last.
The Smiths are nice but I feel like I get

More bang for the buck from my Rugers. I have two 629's but I don't shoot anything hotter than +P in them. For full 44 loads I use my Contender. I have a stainless K Frame and same thing, shoot +P 38. Sent Gary a donor SBH to make me a Southern Pride 357 with 356 GNR cylinder. Gonna do the same for two more guns 41 mag/41 GNR and 44 Mag/429 GNR.
a +P 44 magnum? Is there such a thing? A magnum is a magnum.

I would stay with standard factory equivalent loads in any Smith 44 mag and stay way away from CorBon, Buffalo Bore and any other that is listed as a hotter than normal load. Like John Taffin says, the S&W is a thoroughbred race horse, the Ruger is the work horse. If you want double action for the hotter loads go with the Redhawk.
44 Spl loads a little hotter than normal

But not 44 Mag full loads. In my 357 Smith I shoot 38+p
