I wanted to say to everyone that went on the hunt at the beginning of this month with the Misfits that I had an amazing first trip with my mother-in-law Teressa McClure. I also wanted to thank everyone else, of which there are too many to name them all, for helping me and giving me some amazing advice and tips so I could have a successful hunt. I look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Now down to business. I am looking to get a good beginner rifle. I am looking for suggestions on brand and caliber. I do not reload right now so I would need something I can buy rounds for. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions and tips. Thank you.

check on the Savage Axis in 308. It is the perfect starter

of the 7.62 NATO, close to the same except for the NATO loading specifics to machine gun use. I've shot some NATO in a commercial .308 but it usually is HOT loaded and not for sporting uses. Well, except for military type target competition. Do they use the 7.62 NATO in the Navy?

I thought .308 was loaded higher pressure than 7.62 x 51?

The .308 can actually recoil pretty stiff in a bolt gun. Humorously the only "scope eyebrow" I ever got that bled was from a .308 Win. in a 788 Remington. The big stuff you KNOW to be careful with the eye relief. The little .308 is loaded to .30-06 performance with modern ball powders and 150 gr. bullets. It's no cork gun in a 7 lb. rifle to boot. She sneaked up on me and bit.

the book says the 308 civilian is hotter than the 308 NATO

There are many good rifles. Both starters and professional. Not even sure what defines the two. Personally think if you buy the best, you will own the best.

I'd suggest watching the Saturday Sales on here. Have seen and bought some really nice guns at silly low prices.

Remember it's Gary who provides these HHC and African opportunities. I know I would have never headed east if not for this forum, Gary and the Misfits.

Guess where my support goes?,,,

Try to go to a local gun store that has rifles on a rack that you can pick up and handel. See what you like. What you like will likely change over time as you gain experience. If you buy quality it will always be worth good money in a trade. Give a call out just before the next HHC and everyone will bring there favorite rifle. And you can shoot them all. No substitute for hands on experience. Some gun ranges have guns you can shoot there. $.02 ;0)

Thank you
