Hello All:

I see Ruger now has a GP 100 in 10mm. The reports on it are very favorable. Same can be said of the Ruger 1911 in 10mm.

Sooooo. Thinking out loud a bit, which one would you get for general trail use?

I'm thinking of use mostly in the backwoods of New England and possibly down South when and if fortune allows it.

I kind of like the revolver for someone who reloads but the 1911 is nice for flat carry and two extra rounds.

Thanks for any input.

For trail use I like a revolver

For carry around town I opt for the semiauto for ease of concealment!

I confess, I have both. The wheelgun has

a nice advantage of being able to digest cheap .40 S&W ammo too, which is cool. People throw away .40 S&W brass and hoard 10mm. Only Glock 20's, but I have seem two variations that will shoot and cycle both .40 S&W and 10mm (the actual chambering) by headspacing off the extractor. I'm not condoning it, just stating fact. I'd sure not try that with a normal 1911 though. The Glock sort of manages it like a Mauser, sliding the ctg. under the extractor before it's chambered. An odd trait of the design. I even converted my G21 to 9mm Luger with a special barrel and spring, using the same .45 ACP extractor!

A GP100 size 10mm would be and is the tits. Oddly both my GP and Doug's SA Reeder Ruger 4", neither sport velocity drops compared to the locked breach semi-auto 10mm. No performance drop at all.

I had both, the 1911 left this week

Just wondering what you other folks attending the HHC plan to hunt. I am thinking about trying for a Fallow doe with my 256 Falcon. Jr hasn't decided since he's got to foot the bill himself this time. We still have some of his boar in the freezer from last time. Throwing some boar ribs and loins on the grill Monday.

The 10mm 1911 will probably function with

40 S&W too.

I'm not certain the extractor clips before fully chamber.

It's a goofy thing to do in the first place. Just some useful emergency knowledge.

In these situations my answer always is

Im a reloader. I look at seating bullets long for impressive performance. Also, can shoot the 40 S&W in the revolver.

Do you typically shoot one platform better

than the other? I'm ok with a 1911 @ "combat" type distances but shoot much better with revolvers for longer shots. Can't go wrong with one of each. . .

Most woods walking I go revolver. But when I travel

Out west go to national parks or 4 Wheeling in the high country I take the 1911 in 45super. Works for 4 legged critters and really I worrie more about the 2 legged varmints the most! And they travel in packs now a day's never know what you will run into on a hike!

Hmm. 45 Super. How do you like that round?
