I'm thinking of trading off the scope and swapping to a 3-9x, 2-10x, etc. But I may procrastinate. The 5x is Fine to 200 yds. for sure. I doubt I could hit a Dik-dik at 300 but maybe something bigger with good conditions. Also I'm ordering some 300 gr. Barnes to blast out to see how the recoil is.

For years I have used nothing but 1.5 x5 one my CVA .50 and

Weatherbye . 358 Win I use both for field and swamp
Mine have Burris
I have a Weaver 1x3 on my Henry .41
and they all have done well for me
Now my Tang model Ruger 30.60 ( made in 1976) I use a Burris Signature 3x9 but it is loaded with a 125-150 gr SST or BT and a lot of H4350
Mv of the 150 is 3095

Over all I still am content with the smaller scopes

416 scope

I had a Leupold 2-7X on my MK2 416 because of eye relief. I had taken the rifle to deer camp for some pre-Africa practice when I busted my eye brow open from the kick. Had a brake installed and that scope and using 400gr TBBC sp`s I made some shots on game close to 200yds... Most shots were closer but that scope served me well...

I have used leupold 2x7 scopes for years

I jave 4 mounted right now. However I don't have the space to shoot over 200 yards, or the inclination to hunt that way. I like to hunt the woods and thickets, not fields and cut overs. Therefore I will need to do a lot of practice if ever I make the Africa trip!

Point I am making is I keep them on 2x while hunting. I don't remember ever changing the power before shooting at game. I have killed deer at around 150 in 2x setting but always had time to adjust if I had been thinking about it. I have a 3x leupold in a drawer that will be perfect on something.

keep that scope on your 416. Kase used that gun in Africa 2

2 years and used it with a straight 4X and it did all he needed it to do. The PH will not ask you to shoot a 5 lb Dik Dik with the 416, and if he does it is because it is 20 yards from you and you need to shoot it now. My very first animal in Africa was a 15 lb Red Duiker and I shot him with the 378 GNR, mainly because that was what i had in my hand when we spotted the Duiker at 20 yards.

My recommendation is forget anything Barnes. The best 416 caliber dangerous game bullets (in my humble opinion) are the Hornady DGX, the expanding bullet at 400 grain, and the DGS the solid at 400 grains, both designed for the 416 Rigby. I used the 500 grain Hornady DGX on my Cape Buff a couple of weeks ago out of my 13" Encore and it dropped him like a rock. He stumbled back to his feet but a second DGX put him down for good. The Hornady bullets are all I would ever use for dangerous game.

that 416 before WB bought it..Burris 4X I think

the 416 Rigby is the top gun. The bottom gun is Colleen's 458 that I built her for her first African hunt. She will probably take it back on the next hunt It was an ebony stock with ivory gripcap and forend cap.
