My wife has no appreciation

Just watched an episode of Penny Dreadful. It is set in Victorian England. A guy buys an “experimental” pistol that will .”stop an elephant”. It is a broom handle Mauser of course. I tell the wife that it wouldn’t stop an elephant but Churchill capped several natives with one and credited it with saving his life. (We just saw the new Churchill movie, very good). I went on to relate that he had hurt his shoulder playing polo and couldn’t use his Sabre, so in the last cavalry charge of the British army at Khartoum, he used a broom handle instead. The expedition was in retaliation for the maadi’s cutting off general Chinese Gordon’s head. She said “you’re making that up!”

figured you would be watching The Ghost & the Darkness

although the lions that were killing all the workers looked like females, from what I have been told they were just maneless males.

Yep, I'm not a movie or TV watcher. But, that...

Was a good one. Truth is had an impact on my gun choices and asking Daren to bring his 303 British.

Of course, my affection for vintage rifle designs was around long before the movie.

Maybe Daren will feel like Val Kilmer for a few hours with the 303 #1. Then again, he's already taken deer with it.

Got in just a while ago...

I was stuck in DFW airport, all flights to San Antonio cancled for weather. I'm at a conference.

I have seen the Lions, the actual animals, stuffed at the Shedd's in Chicago. They are small examples. However I read that they were much bigger! Seems the Lions were made into rugs, then later the skins were trimmed and formed into full body mounts. FWIW.

Daren and you both may see a lion or two in a couple

of months. On 3 of my safaris I have seen them and we were stalked by a very old lioness that looked exactly like the ones in the pictures I posted. And in Venetia we had 2 males walk right thru the camp one evening.

We will be further north, toward the equator, than in Rooiport so you may very well see a lion or two.

Sex?

They were males, but Patterson had them made into rugs originally and they were later stuffed. I've never been to the Field Museum, but I've heard the lions as stuffed are smaller than (reported) in life because of this. It would make sense if they lacked the hide for certain... details.

Another book to re-read, another movie to re-watch- both excellent.

maneless

Male lions in the Tsavo region are known for not having manes.
I read an article years ago on the subject. Two hypotheses were presented, with no definite conclusion.
One was because it is so hot in that region, a mane is a detriment, and the other was because the Tsavo is so overgrown, a large mane is again a detriment for moving through the underbrush.

There is a Nat Geo article from 2005 that discusses the lions from that area.
