Have been thinking about rechambering a 5-shot .41 Hunter from .41 GNR to .410 GNR. The gun has a 5.5" barrel. For those of you who have them, if you have chronographed the 255 Cast Performance bullet from a 5-7" barrel could you please post the results...Thanks...Bob

Bob, don't worry too much about speed. Accuracy kills, not

speed. This African Savannah buffalo was killed with one shot from the 410 GNR in a 6" revolver with the 255 grain bullet from Cast Performance. And I have no idea how fast it runs. It is accurate and that is all I need to know.

Hello Gary... I have the 5-shot 5.5" Ultimate .41 Hunter you made up for me in .41 Magnum and .41 GNR. Using .41 Magnum brass I get the following velocities:

300 grain Mountain Mold: 1276 fps

255 Cast Performance: 1350 fps

250 grain Accurate Mold 41-250L: 1413 fps

250 Cast Performance WFN-GC: 1310

Was just wondering if anyone who has a 5-7" revolver has chronographed any loads to see what the velocity difference was.

5 shots at 100 yards sitting with the 250L. Three are in that one hole...one low right and I dropped the last shot off the target about 2" low...

the 41 GNR will beat those velocities by 200 to 250 fps,

while the 410 GNR will normally beat them by 350 to 400 fps. But like I said above, don't get all hyped up about the velocities. Accuracy and bullet placement is what counts. I have probably 25 to 30 revolvers in my calibers and I have never chrono'd any of them. They are accurate and that is what counts. In fact several years ago I pulled my chronograph out of the closet and sent it to a friend as I had no use for it.

What is the max bullet weight for the 410? 255 or 265 grain?

I wouldn't recommend any bullet heavier than 265

on either of the 41 calibers we have developed with the exception of the 411 GNR. On the 41 GNR, 41 GNR#2 or 410 GNR you lose the hydro static shock that helps put the animal down immediately.

Gary...if you recall I have that "pirate" .41 GNR #2 barrel that I got from Kelly B. It is 13" plus and inch of compensator that was a rechamber of a 14" TC .41 barrel. I worked up to 42.0 grains or AA1680 with the 255 CP, 265 CP and 300 grain SSK from Penn Bullets. The 255 ran 2075/2060/2068 over the chronograph. For some reason when I ran the other two bullets I wasn't using the chrono. All I remember is that the 300 grain load hurt to shoot with the Contender frame. I have since bought a G2 frame but haven't loaded for the barrel again...need to do that this spring..Bob

I should note that I started at 34 grains/1606, 38/1823, 40/1966, 41/1980 and 42/2068. There were no pressure signs at that point and I simply ran out of powder space... The 300 grain SSK was seated out to the middle lube groove.

Bob, we put out over 400 barrels a year since about 1987

I do good to remember Kelly Brost, much less a barrel he owned. We have built 10 to 15 barrels from our Christmas sale in the last week or so and I did all the engraving etc on them and I don't remember any of them, so no I don't remember that barrel.

It is your barrel so you can load whatever you like in it. I just said I do not recommend anything over 265 grains in it. It was developed, just like the 41 GNR and 410 GNR, for medium weight bullets as they gave us the most gain in performance when bullet weight was compared to powder charges. But whatever floats your boat is fine. It's your barrel. I have taken at least 10 animals that weigh over 1800 lbs with a 210 grain bullet in the 41 GNR, one shot each (with plenty of witnesses) so I personally see no advantage in the heavier bullets. My humble opinion.

5.5" 212 gr cast hp 1640//255 with GNR's load 1555
