That looks like a 1920-30’s Police Positive Special

They are a true delight. Slightly larger than a S&W J frame and 6-shot. Really popular in the day with security, foreign police & military. I particularly liked the 4” .38 Spec. and the .32-20. The Police Positive has a shorter frame and is chambered for the shorter .38 S&W (.38 Colt Police) and .32 New Police.
That’s a good one. I’m drooling…

Well almost. He carried a four inch wood grip version.
If not mistaken Barney packed an Official Police

Which is the larger E frame chassis (hammer firing pin), same size as the I frame Python (frame mounted firing pin). I'm not a Colt snob but the true collectors are quite discriminating. LOL
One that Gary worked his magic on a couple years ago.

It's a Tyler T-grip away from perfection to me.
It has a T-grip on it now.

I love Colt revolvers but other than the SAA

And older Cap & Ball revolvers, I’ve never found one I like the grip. The Tyler or Mershon (Pachmayr) grip fillers really do help. I much prefer the Tyler aluminum version. I used to buy them for 0.25-$1 each at gun shows. I had the fitting chart numbers memorized. Now the prices ar 50x that, even used!
You are correct

I was going by memory.
Found some pics of Barney with his Colt; definitely the bigger frame of the Official Police.
Thats great! On in the evenings a bit later...

was Gunsmoke and Marshall Dillon had that 7-1/2" Nickel Great Western! I now a lot of old Cops back in the 1960's carried Nickel guns not only for corrosion resistance but to profile their presence of authority. It was respected back then. A big Colt or N-frame fixed sighted revolver on the hip!
Bonanza was all the rage too but I can't remember much about their guns they used.
The "5" on the box, it must denote the barrel length.

That looks like a 5". A bit unique and holy grail length for S&W N-frames.
I also note Barney had a 4" gun, mostly, and carried in a 6" holster. In shots of the jail office I always tried to spy what kind of long guns they had in that rack. I remember Andy fetching a M94 Winchester once to go after a bad situation. You know he never carried a gun on regular duty.
