Is there a classic "pet load" for a 500 gr. bullet

rather than FFg or Pyrodex? I need to step my Sharps load up just a bit to get the sights to be closer, at less than 100 yds. I'm about a foot high at closer ranges running around 1,000 fps. I think 1200-1300 fps would do it. I didn't have any fair rifle powder to use so I used an old Lyman load using fast shotgun/pistol powder and a filler Dacron tuft. But it limits velocity as pressures rise quickly in relation to performance. Now slower rifle powder is available in my neck of the woods ($40-45 per lb).

I also have an interest in "Express" level loads using 300-350 gr. cast loads for economy. No telling how much lower those would hit depending on velocity. I'm wanting to mimic old BP performance with smokless.

500 gr. #457129 Loaded OAL = 2.835"

Loads for Springfield Trapdoor

4198 = Top load is 31.5 gr. for 1287 fps @ 16,700 CUP

3031 = Top load is 42.0 gr. for 1332 fps @ 17,900 CUP

I've used 3031 it's great in long .405 cased GNR calibers

Too. Both Sean and Puffy liked it in .378 GNR I remember. I had some 4064 I used that was a bit bulkier, maybe 5% slower velocity. I see you favor 4198 for .45/70 or want to work something different. I don't remember any unusual 3031 attributes other than an occasional unburned kernel or three. Do you have any favorable insight on the 4198? 3031 meters a bit roughly through a volumetric dispenser.

I decided to switch to it based on Mic McPhereson's advice

He said it's easy to light ... fills the case well .. and keeps pressures in the range I wanted.

Well over 225 charges per $40 pound

That’s really good for a rifle, about the same as a .223! If I can just catch most of those bullets to recycle. I may try a pound too.
