I ask a lot

of questions on here well, because I don't know the answer and know someone here always does.

Is a Super Blackhawk strong enough to shoot a few 305 gr. hard cast bear loads? These will not be Buffalo Bore. Or should I stick with the 240 gr. hard cast?

I have a .510 GNR built on the Super Blackhawk

frame and I shoot 350 grain hard cast LBT bullets in it. Montana Bullet Works has them. Stick with the loads in Gary's Red Reloading manual and you can't go wrong... Or at least you shouldn't, anything is possible I suppose. OR
are you asking about a .44 magnum load? IF so, the 305 grain LBT hard cast will do ok if you don't try full house loads and back off of the 240 loads as a start.

Thanks Larry, the loads I am

referring to are the HMS 305 gr. bear load and the Double Tap 240 gr. hard cast. I do not reload and these are obviously both factory loads.

I HAVE SHOT MANY, MANY 300 GRAIN BULLET

LOADS IN BOTH TH E.44 AND .45 COLT RUGER. FORMER AROUND 1300 FPS AND LATTER AT 1200+ FPS. WORKS FINE. SOME FACTORY 300 LOADS ARE TOO LONG TO FIT THE SB CYLINDER.

44 mag factory loads

The best factory jacketed load is Swift 300gr. Swift A-frame at 1430 fps. The best cast bullet load for a Ruger Super Blackhawk is Garrett Cartridges 310 gr. hammerhead at 1325fps. If you want a milder effective load try Federal Premium with 280gr. Swift A-frame at 1170fps.

try several loads shown in the loading manuals and you

will find a load that you and your gun likes. Alcorn is a Swift A Frame fan, while my favorite bullets are the Sierra bullets. Being weaned on the Super Vel 44 Magnum 180 grain bullet I found long ago that in most cases I can do just as well with the light to medium weight bullets as I could with a heavy bullet and have less recoil and less back thrust on my elbow and my gun. For that reason I never use the real heavy bullets. In 44 Mag I seldom go over 260 grain bullets. In a 41 GNR I always use one of the 210 or 220 grain Silhouette bullets and in most cases one shot will do the trick if I do my part.

The only time I use a heavy bullet is in my Encore for dangerous game. My Cape Buffalo was taken with one shot in the 450 GNR and a 500 grain soft point .458 caliber bullet.
Again my personal preference only. Try different loads and you will find a load that you and your 44 like.

Handgun hunting was all the rage. Shooting Times and Dick Metcalf wrote about some type of handgun hunting article each month.

My favorite writer, Bob Milek, did the same with Guns and Ammo as well as some specialty publications devoted to it.

It seemed that at the time a 320 grain hard cast bullet was in vogue for anything big and ugly. I too jumped on that bandwagon and bought an SSK bullet mold and an LBT mold for my 44's.

Fun times .

It’s not so much the bullet weight

As how crazy fast you want to push it. Every caliber custom in 6 shot or 5 are made on that frame. Be sensible with speed. A 305 at 1000 is a joy to shoot, overload it and you will hurt yourself and the Ruger.

The HMS is listed as

being 1260 fps and the Double tap is listed as 1455.

I came into a pile of SSK 330 gr. TC cast

Probably due to your same situation. In the .44 it’s ok up to around 1300 fps. Then I get my fill of it pretty fast! I have been shooting them in my SBH at 1000-1200 fps. Only problem is the added recoil for residence time in barrel makes it shoot high. Only solution is to change the front (rear is at its mechanical limits) or push the bullet faster, and that just hurts!

Mould was called 320gr.

At the HHC. That was like riding a bull!
Lots of power out of that short barrel.

Puffy helped Roman get that at HHC one year.

The short 9" barrel gives almost full power for the .429 GNR Encore. An Uber Pirate gun. It will shoot a 320 gr. at some 1500+ fps. Bullets that heavy will work in the .429 GNR single shot but NOT revolvers. The bullets will pull under recoil due to the short neck and minimized neck tension.

Normally I'd want at 12" or so for balance but the shorty does not give up much.

WB was that an Encore or g2?

along with 500 GNR and 510 GNR revolvers based on the Super Blackhawk. It all comes down to basic common sense. if you stick with the loads shown in the reloading manuals and not go overboard with extra heavy bullets you and the gun will be fine.

So, in layman's terms

I am fine with the 2 loads mentioned? Neither are extra heavy hard casts and within SAAMI specs.

yup
