All the 357 Magnum talk lately reminded me to post this

also our mention below of hearing the bullet hit but not hearing the gun firing is mentioned here. This is the first 5 pages of Al Goerg's Handgunning book, and is the story of D.B. Wesson of S&W shooting the first 357 Magnum made and the animals taken. This should open your eyes...
By the way this is a bit crude but all i had here at the house..

The advancements in propellants and bullet designs were not there as we understand it today. They were discovering things as they lived out the adventures. Goerg came some 25-30 yrs. later and greatly improved on the ideas and knowledge of bullet performance and use of the .357 on his beloved high altitude sheep. (by then favoring the Colt Python) Plus Wesson probably didn't write about the moose he shot in the arse, tracked 10 miles, and lost (my story but plausible). Things were of a different mind and attitude back then too. Manly, men would never admit weakness or anything less than complete victory in print! Just not done. (By 99.9%)

The long barrel N-frame does maximize the performance and hit probability. That little 158 running a real 1500+ will do most chores if you hit your mark. It can surprise.

Some other guys about the same time "invented" the 10mm Magnum by reaming out SAA cylinders for a shortened .401 WSL case and plucking it in a .38 WCF frame and barrel. But that was not mainstream or marketable. The old fix sighted Cowboy gun was not fancy or modern enough to attract much attention. The big DA revolver with adjustable sights was the practical future.

D.B. Wesson was a good showman, promoter, and common soul adventurer. The .357 Magnum is still holding it's own in like hands.

In my teens, I loved to hog hunt...

When I turned 15 in 1979, my bday present was a New Marlin 1894 in 357 Magnum. My Dad always loved rifle/pistol combo cartridges. It was purchased to compliment my Security Six the same month.

Killed some mighty big and mean hogs with that gun. Don't recall ever having to fire a second shot to finish a hog.

Clearly, I didn't kill enough of them. Today they are epidemic here. Louisiana has made it legal to hunt them 24/7 here.

So here’s a question.....the 356GNR is a modern

And updated 357 in my opinion. I shoot mine often with 158gr xtps. What game would best match that combo. If I ever get back to HHC I’m taking it!

I took one to Africa in 2018....

Upping my bullet weight to 180.

I have taken 500 lb Nilgai with the 356 GNR in a 9" barrel

and have watched guys take cow elk with it with the 180 grain Hornady bullet. I took a big Yak with the 356 GNR and again that 9" barrel.

actually the 356 GR will duplicate the ballistics of the 180

grain 44 mag. So any animal up to cow elk will be fine with the 356 GNR.

Out of a rifle the 357 runs with the 30-30 for a ways..

and is durn effective. I've watched friends bring down some big deer easily with the .357 rifle.

Lil Gun Powder is the ticket in 357 Magnum Rifles...

Even though in 1979, we didn't have it.

I won't burn in my revolvers due to forcing cone damage. But, in a TC or Rifle, it's a game changer.

In my carbine, a max load of H110 pushes a 158 grn XTP at 1,800 fps. Switching to Lil Gun gives an extra 260 fps at 2,060 fps.

Yessir .. that is right there with 30-30 levels ...

though the bullet is not as aerodynamic .. it will run with the old 30-30 to open sight distances.

Still have that Marlin from 1979???

made me want a long tube model 27 (Can't afford a Registered Magnum) with Magna grips. I thought "maybe those guys were on to something...". The guns are almost like magic wands!

Great read, thank you Gary. One wonders why they never gas
