I only have an Encore base on hand and the screw holes are the same of course. I cant think of any problems I'd encounter, and am thinking the longer scope ring distance would be easier on the scope for the 416GNR recoil. Am I dumb or is it just a dumb question?

You mean Encore .416 GNR, don’t you?!

I figure all .416 GNR are on Encore tubes. Unless you are way badder a boy than me! I have a fixed 2x on mine. Is plenty for me.

Nope, the 416 GNR and 450 GNR were both

developed on the Contender way before the Encore ever came out. In fact I used the 416 GNR in '94, and '95 in Africa based on a Contender. The 375 GNR #2 was also based on the Contender frame as was the 378 GNR.

I had somehow forgotten that. Any hoo

That’s still my suggestion. The extra weight will help. Also Pachmayr rubber grips and forend weigh lots more than factory, if you can find them. I’d find some less expensive cast gas check .416 bullets and stoke those boys with that Trail Boss powder, would be real easy shooting and still shoot through any pig you could find. That HAWK custom bullet place has custom pure copper and lead core .416 in lighter weights too. Lots of fun.

that is the difference between me and you and a dog named

Boo. I never load my hunting loads down, ever. I load all of them with the load I would use in Africa or wherever. If I have a hunt coming up I want that handgun to be sighted in perfect with the load I will be using on the hunt. And with Murphy's Law, if I have a hunt for big game, I will grab the box of pussy loads.

My 450 GNR and 310 GNR ammo left from my last African hunt is still sitting on the shelf where I keep my hunting ammo. For the 2018 hunt I loaded 50 of the 450 GNR and 50 of the 310 GNR. I used 2 of the 450 GNR and 4 of the 310 GNR, so I have plenty left. Before my next Africa hunt in May I will shoot both guns a few times to make sure they are still sighted in and that's it. If I had been drawn for the elephant hunt I would have done a lot of shooting with the new 417 GNR which is considerably hotter than the 416 GNR or the 450 GNR. But I didn't get drawn (there were only 2 permits in Namibia for bull elephant) so no problem. And no biggie. The taxidermy company in Africa lost my big Cape Buffalo hide and horns so they are paying for me to hunt another Cape Buffalo. So that is my goal right now. John, my PH, seems to think we can find a buffalo bigger than my one that was lost, even though it ranked #2 in the world/handgun. It may be farther down the record book now as over a year has gone by, but again no big deal. Any hunt in Africa is a great hunt, and I am looking forward to it. This will be my last Africa hunt and I want it to be a good one.

You might consider the 4X Leupold. I have it on my 416 Taylor and it has stood up to many firings.

yep, on a heavy recoiling gun a straight

2X or 4X is always the best way to go. A variable has too many moving parts and much more of a chance of giving up the ghost.

I have a Leupold VX3i 1.5-5 mounted

on my CZ550 African in .375 H&H. It appears to be holding up well. Most of my shots are less than 150 yards so don't need higher power but I do need the intermediate powers because of my eyes. Do you think that this scope will hold up?

there is no way of knowing. It either will or

won't. A rifle absorbs recoil differently that a handgun, so you should be fine. If you haven't done so already, put a good muzzle brake on the gun and a Decelerator pad and the gun and scope should last you a lifetime.

Larry, it can be done but I highly recommend against it.

The section of the base that actually touches the barrel is much less than it is with the proper base. The contour of the barrel is nowhere near what the contour of the base is. I would recommend holding off until you get the proper base. If you can't find one, give us a call as we have plenty.

pick up the Leupold Dual Dovetail base

for the Contender and put a green pea size dab of 2 part epoxy under the front of the base. Keep the epoxy away from the screw holes and away from the dovetail slots. Let it sit overnight and you will be set.

I’ll pick one up tomorrow. Thanks!
