Good read, makes me want one more :). Saw his was built on the 336 instead of the 1895, didn't think the action would be big enough for that round.

not nice to promote someone else on Garys forum.

Not promoting any one just reading some neat info. Still dont see how the Big 50 could fit in a 336 frame.

Yeah, I didn't see any promotion at all...

Seemed more info gathering for a future project to me. Gary can answer your question so you'll know which base gun to scout for...

is there any difference in the 336 and 1895, I think they are the same frame. Maybe the ejection and load gates are opened up bigger?

I think so too, machined different on inside and bolt face..

Articles on Leverguns all the time for information and good stories. Articles by JT, Jim Taylor, Gary has a couple I believe, Lee Jurras , etc. Always enjoy each one I read and usually learn something or get a good laugh.

put a 50 Alaskan in a 336 frame is just asking for trouble. Everything about the gun has to change, The internal ribs have to be removed, the loading gate has to be changed, the ejection port has to change, the front of the frame has to undergo a lot of change to let the wider rimmed cartridge to drop down into the frame, the mag tube has to change for the larger cartridge, the lifter has to be changed for the larger cartridge, the bolt face has to be opened up and several other smaller items have to be changed too. And if even one of these is not quite right it won't be reliable. We picked up a 336 frame in an estate that had been momkeyed with trying to make it work with the 348 round. We had to do all the above plus more to bring the gun back to life. We spent about 3 times the man hours doing all this than we would have with an 1895 frame.

Will hunt for a deal on a 1895!

I've seen several wood ones split with heavy recoil.

By the way, I was not trying to promote another gunsmiths work. Delete that post if you need to.
