. . . load the chamber from the magazine and not let the slide slam shut on a chambered round. Let the gun work the way it was designed to.

You can always remove the magazine and replace the round you just chambered to get the "fully loaded" condition.

And yes, it's a really good idea to not re-use a round that has been chambered repeatedly.
