Male lions in the Tsavo region are known for not having manes.
I read an article years ago on the subject. Two hypotheses were presented, with no definite conclusion.
One was because it is so hot in that region, a mane is a detriment, and the other was because the Tsavo is so overgrown, a large mane is again a detriment for moving through the underbrush.
