They were males, but Patterson had them made into rugs originally and they were later stuffed. I've never been to the Field Museum, but I've heard the lions as stuffed are smaller than (reported) in life because of this. It would make sense if they lacked the hide for certain... details.
Another book to re-read, another movie to re-watch- both excellent.
