Last month I was thinking about working up a snake load for the 45 ACP's I have, 1- glock , 2- 1911's.
Looked at Ebay and the RCBS dies ran $200+ if you can find them, not good.
Checked around and found some were using 45 Win Mag brass run thru a 40 SW die ( to downsize -to fit acp chamber). I tried this but the 45 Win brass would not size evenly ( middle pic) you can see the scratches on the brass.
I tried Gary's 410 GNR sizing die and worked perfectly sizing was very even around brass ( right pic)
Game Plan:
45 Win Mag brass
Powder 231- 6.5 gr
Shot- #9 - about 150 gr, fill to top
gas checks- (2) 375 cal
1) Run 45 Win Brass in 410 GNR sizer die ( die should resize about 1/2" down , only trying to fit the 45 acp chamber.
2) powder load 6.5 gr 231
3) cover powder with (1)- 375 caliber gascheck(flat side facing up)
4) load #8 or #9 shot to top of case, about 150 gr
5) cover with (1) 375 gascheck (flatside up), crimp with 410 GNR die , you can see the amount of crimp in the right picture, it holds everything in place tightly and will work both the glock slide and the 1911 slides perfectly.
Runs about 900 fps with a decent pattern at 7 yards.

Think cut off '06 brass might work?

and seat them in the cut down '06 case it would work. That is similar to what I had to do to make 44 Auto Mag brass. I used any of the brass that had the correct thickness base, like '08, '06, and so on.

Not sure about the extractor groove angle, I will look.

I made 1 case from 30-06 cut to the 45 Win Mag length.

Looks good ,it fit the mag and would chamber from the mag. Also I could get the cartridge to chamber and extract when running the slide by hand , so I will make a few with 231- 6.0gr of powder and see if they run the glock ok.

I found the brass that was the best all around was Lake City Match brass in 308. It seemed to be the best piece by piece. The wall thickness was the same and all the other individual measurements were the same. The inside walls down to the 1/2 inch mark were reamed out so a 44 caliber bullet would seat. This was a real pain in the schwantz but that was the only way we could get decent brass for our Auto Mags. Not suggesting you go to all the hassle trying to find the Lake City Match brass, just passing along some totally useless info.
