I’ve owned just one, a 30-30 carbine. In a weak moment of stupidity I traded it off to someone who really wanted it. Growing up a friend had a ‘99 in .250 Sav. It was an interesting counter to our other friend’s Remington auto in .243. The old Savage lever guns and even the odd rimmed American 8mm (.303 Savage) caliber were quite popular. Many photos depict explorers and adventurers showing full confidence in old photos, usually sporting taken critters. I think it a curious choice in icy weather but I guess I’m goofy. They are neat guns for a collection if you are careful to select one without splintered forends or a crack at the tang wood. But I kind of like them.

HAD to have it so I sold it to him and he traded it within 6 months-twit. I still have one in 308 though, aluminum rotary mag so not a very old one.

That’s a dandy! Preferred model and caliber.

It’s the straight grip “carbine” version. Very handy, and that hot little .25 cal. gives up little to the popular .243. We shot the Hornady 117 gr. RN. A great whitetail killer, running north of 2500 fps. That’s the little Savage to have. I think I read the original 1985-99 Savages were built by Marlin?! They run around $3000 for collectors! Crazy.

The .300 Savage is a good case design and right on the heels of the .308.

Mine has a 1978 serial number and I bought it new.

Model. I was around 12 and I put it to good use taking woodchucks hanging around along the stone walls. I'm still on hunt for one chambered in 358. The 99 is one of my favorite rifles.

That would be a dandy, I think the most powerful chambering

The largest bore I think was the .410 shotgun barrels as accessory shotgun barrels. That was a great idea, I think. I did see several older guns in .38-55 Winchester as well. Since they had the .30-30 and .303 Sav. It’s basically just a bigger hole ahead of the chambering. Still a good thumper, throwing 250 gr. bullet.

Now if I can only find a shooter that I can afford.
