The plan is to head out early in the AM with one of three pre-scouted spots where I can hunt. This season will be a tad different. The state of Maine does not have a minimum barrel length for shotguns thus the TC Contender or Encore .410 pistol barrel is legal.

I know some are cringing but there are some using the TSS 9 shot to take down birds with the .410 in a handgun configuration.

A while back I bought an SSK .410 barrel with a very tight choke. The barrel is rifled in the sense that it is very shallow straight rifling which does not affect the spread.

I was a tad disappointed at the performance. As you can see here on a couple of targets, the patterns at 20-25 yards aren't impressive.

I know others who are using different chokes and loads to take birds at 30 to 40 yards. I know it is a stretch but I would like to see a tighter group so that a 30 yard bird is doable.

Maybe the smart thing would be to just put the 20 gauge 3" Encore barrel on the Encore frame and use some 20 gauge turkey loads.

To be sure, and I have never been good at calling. Good luck!

I have not seen or heard a turkey this year and

that is NOT good in Texas, I only went 1 time in early March.
The county I hunt in the season was March 14 to end of April, we do have a lot of birds but they move around a lot. I have had 10-15 turkeys at the feeder during deer season for 1-2 days and then not see any for a month.

North of Georgetown. Don't see them a lot but sometimes hear them roosting in the evening. The opening day there was a lone turkey hen walking down the road like a tourist. I figured she was pushed out by some hunters.

I was riding my motorcycle about to crest the ridge

When I was suddenly attacked by a flock of wild turkeys! They were everywhere in front of me. On the ground, in the air, locked on course! Running about 60 mph my flight deflection was limited to only a foot either way. With God’s grace I missed them all.

Can you imagine someone in the vehicle in front of you starting to pitch Butterballs at you going down the highway?! You’d not want to catch one in the face or chest. Would have peeled me right off.
