I’m sitting on roughly 500 pcs of new Starline 357 brass. Let hear about your favorite loads … cast … jacketed … whatcha got? These will be used in numerous 357s.

I like the lighter bullets fora lot of things..

the 125 gr. Speer Gold Dot and HotCor bullets work well in the .357 rifle. I push the Gold Dot to 2300 fps from the Rossi Model 92. The same load does 1340 fps from the 1 1/2" S&W Model 340 and over 1600 out of the 7 1/2" single action.
20.0 gr. H-110

With cast bullets I like 14.5 gr. 2400 and a small rifle primer for the Keith 170 gr. SWC.

I use that load for the 160 gr. SAECO SWC also.

But I shoot more 3.0 gr. Bullseye loads than anything else... using .38 Special brass. :-)

It sounds a little goofy but for years I’ve used

5.5 grs. Unique with lead bullets ranging from 124-180 grs. The heavier bullets just have more power/pressure. The old 158 SWC I used to load in .38 Specials. It was a top load for the .38 in an old Hornady manual. It sure made my little Police Positive bark! I figured 900-1000 fps? The later manuals had that load listed as a .357 level loading?! Oh well.

Just got one and was loading some 158 grain SPs over 15.5 296 for around 1700 FPS. Thought that the heavier bullets would be better for hogs/deer. After reading Jim's post should I be using the 125s?? Thoughts???

I would use the heavier bullets for hogs and deer.

You want the penetration. The 125 gr. bullets slow down real quickly.

I was with a good friend when he shot a deer with his .357 rifle, a nice Whitetail buck. He used factory 140 gr. JHP. One shot. The deer was down within 30 yards or so.

I’m going to find some data for heavy

With a .338 GNR Encore pistol. It was down but thrashing a bit. It fell on the downhill side exposing its underbelly. Doug had a 5” S&W “Victory” pre-K frame .38 Special. It was loaded with LEE tumble lube 124 gr. 9mm projectiles ahead of 5.5 gr. Unique (best I can figure). He shot the beast square between the legs in the chest. The bullet centered the heart, to exit, penetrating the spine on its way out. A .38 Special! I’m almost certain velocity is under 1000 fps. It’s only one real work case but it’s shot through a bunch of stuff before too. Just a clean .35 cal. hole in and out.
