Holster question:chest vs tanker vs ?

Recently I was having an adult beverage with a hunting companion and the topic of “other” holsters came up. We were debating the merits of cross-draw, bandoleer, shoulder, tanker and chest holsters. We were really trying to decide what the best overall system is if you were going to be in the boondocks for an extended period of time and may find yourself on horseback or an atv or even in a plane. Or maybe if the balloon goes up and you have to skedaddle with your loved ones to safety. You might be chopping wood, hunting, wandering around, or just in camp sitting by the fire with a warm cup of coffee in your hand. So, with the winter storm bearing down on most of us, what do you think is the best, overall system for carrying your handgun of choice out in the boonies?

If it’s a Glock or 1911, I go for strong side hip. Every revolver holster I have is either a cross draw or a chest rig.

I carry a lot IWB or close and high strong side for CCW.

But I really enjoy my Kangaroo Carry rig for car trips. Hunting I really enjoy chest or shoulder rigs. A hip holster, take three steps and it pulls my britches down. A bigger handgun I like a sling! Kase always just carried them, nothing wrong with that.

Chest or shoulder rigs work best for me. Good expensive leather ones!

What started this conversation with my friend was a conversation he’d had with a guide out west. That guide said if he were taking a handgun into the back county, he would not do a chest holster. Years earlier he’d had a client who took a 629 to his beak when his horse got unruly. Made me think.
And in the boondocks I don’t know that I want a handgun attached at my waist or on my belt - as it could interfere with a pack or movements required in and around camp. So, I’m thinking a shoulder holster or tanker might be better than chest, but even that - like anything and everything else - is a compromise.

Rob Leahy made a nylon chest rig for me. It fits many different guns and has worked well for me. Not everything has to be expensive.

Dave, I have designed several crossdraw

holsters and a couple of hip holsters. For everyday use not counting a time when you might be upside down for some kinky reason good crossdraw holster is hard to beat. For general use
my Yaqui belt slide holster just plain works. It slides on your belt horizontally and one holster will work for revolvers, autos, even scoped revolvers. I have one of them that I designed back in 1987 and it still works. They come in brown and black.

Even for monster semi autos like the Auto Mag.

In other situations a good crossdraw holster is hard to beat.

I like a good lightweight shoulder holster mostly for autos, like the 1911.It holds an auto under one arm and an extra mag under the opposite arm or you can buy an extra holster and put it in place of the mag holster. This way you have 2 1911s or other semi autos.

My newest holster is probably my favorite for heavy revolvers. The front of the barrel sits in a "cup" and a spring clamps around the cylinder and holds it in place. When you need it you simply pull it toward the front.
Al Goerg, the "father" of handgun hunting designed a shoulder holster back in the early 60s. It was designed for large revolvers. Al died in a place crash in 1965 but we still build the original Goerg holster.

I do like your Yaqui slide

I use mine for a G19 and lately a Star Firestar 45.
