For some strange reason, I have been thinking about a 28 gauge shotgun for upland game. It seems that the 28 gauge with the newer 3 inch chamber has some merit.

One thing I like about the concept of using a 28 is that most of the guns tend to be very lightweight.

Anyone here use a 28 gauge and if so, what are your experiences ? Thank you

I don’t… but

I really wNt a single shot with a long barrel and full choke for squirrel hunting.

It’s not much different from a 3” .410 but

The shot column is shorter/wider so it should give a superior pattern density. As long as shot smaller than #6 will get it done it should be great. I’ve shot squirrel with #4 and #6 in .410 but there are not that many pellets.

Interestingly I have a .56 cal. smooth bore TC Renegade. It is literally the normal .54 cal with the lands drilled out! I think it was a special run for northeastern states where rifled arms were prohibited. It’s a heck of a gun with very good accuracy to at least 75 yds. Super easy to load and clean. .56 also happens to be “28 gauge”, so I can use those wads and shot cups! But being a muzzle loader I could shoot 2 oz. of pellets if I wanted.

28 gauge is great

Light weight, if you use a pointer, you don’t need 3 inch shells. I’ve never used 3” in a 28, but the recoil might be more than this old guy would want. I’ve used 28 gauge for rabbit, mountain quail, and pheasant (with a German Shorthair Pointer), works better than 12 or 20 for me.

28’s are great. I shot Dove and clays and

Would not hesitate to hunt small game with it. The gun is a SXS, W C Scott and Sons Greener Boxlock with Damascus barrels. It’s in 16 ga, I sent it to Brilley and had it tube to 28ga with screw in chokes. It is very light weight even with the tubes. I have hunted with it in 16 ga but prefer it in 28. Gary is a big fan of the 28ga!

I have a couple of CZ O/U in 28 gauge

they are great for carrying all day. I have not yet shot either of them enough to be good with then but hopefully this
crap I have will run it's course and I can shoot a long gun again.
