My 12 Year Old Grandson Took His First Deer
We spent a week in Oklahoma and just got home last night. Had an amazing Thanksgiving gathering with a bunch of family. I had a good time with my daughters, my six grandkids and my 5 3/4 great-grandkids! (One of the grand-daughters is due to produce another great-grandson in a couple weeks)
My 2 grandsons had been hunting deer on their grandpa's farm while there, and saw deer every day but being new at it and eager, were not always ready or in a place where they could shoot. It was pretty cold and the 10 year old had had enough after a couple days, but the 12 year old just kept after it. Yesterday morning he and his Dad went out and got set up where they had seen deer. Just after daylight some deer came in and he took the largest doe. He made about a 70 yard shot and broke her neck. He used the Ruger American Boys rifle we had bought. It's a .243. I loaded the Speer 100 gr. boattail with 32 gr. H414 and it worked quite well. This is downloaded a bit because he and his brother were both recoil sensitive. He told me later, "I did not even feel the recoil!" He's one proud youngster. And we are proud of him because his attitude was to keep going until he got it done! I will post some pictures later.
