When you get up there in years the times are rough on you. There were some posts that I had died when it was another Gary Reeder that had died. I thank Colleen for filling in for me since late December. She answered a lot of posts for me. For those that had wondered, I had a fight with shingles, which turned into Cancer. The shingles is something I wouldn't wish on my worst friend. I spent almost 2 months in the hospital that turned into another 4 or 5 months here at home and I still am not back to normal. I stopped into the Pistol Parlor a week or two ago but that was embarrassing as I didn't know anyone. My memory is non existent. My right eye is pretty much gone. I have my little black eye patch that I have to wear and if we go out evenings the little kids stare at me. I hear the little kids ask their Mom if I am a pirate. Between the eye patch and a limp I try not to go out more that necessary.
I made the HHC but it was a rough road. I didn't recognize people I have known for years. Those of you that I seemed to ignore you, I apologize but the memory just isn't there anymore. I am somewhat back to normal but still not there yet. I plan on being on here more and more good Lord willing.
I also thank Robert for filling in for me and doing the Black Chromex. I am learning how to engrave all over again but that is a lost skill.
For those that know Alcorn and James , give them time. They both have gone thru a hard time and are still not 100% yet. There are times when I walk down our hallway here at the house and I get halfway there and I stop and try to remember what I was going to do. Or I get phone calls from an old friend and halfway thru the call I have to ask them who is this.
Old age isn't for the meek.
It's good to still have you around!

It’s “good to be seen”, in response to folks saying they are glad to see you. You can flip the script and just enjoy making acquaintances all over again. New experiences. The brain is a muscle, don’t forget to exercise it. Natural coconut oil is supposed to be a good supplement for memory.
I’ve known you long enough that Africa tried to kill you at least three times, hypothermia, the sickness, but you got Lions and Buffalo! You don’t have to do much, enjoy your blessings. We still enjoy the fruits of your legacy. Lots of lurkers on the forum and well wishes aplenty. We keep you and all your family in our prayers. Happy Thanksgiving!
(Rocking your eye patch, you remind me of that dude with Dr. Hook. I thought he was a cool cat. I think he lost his eye in an auto accident.) “Sylvia’s mother said….

those 3 times. Three times caused by two Cape Buffalo and a big assed Lion. And 3 other times with bears that wanted to dance. Thanks for remembering those good times Scotty. And don't forget the big African Cobra that that was sunning himself on a berm and I almost stepped on him. Dang!! old memories like that are great! The whole 5 or 6 weeks I was in the hospital and not one person mentioned those memories.
How can you have a bad day when you have memories like them.
Yeah, the Hypothermia just about got me too

Then I got a bug and John had to rush me to a doctors office about 75 miles away. And the doctor's office was half of an old building and the other half was a funeral home. It was in a little African town called No Hope. I was the only white guy to be seen. The Doc was a little old man (witch doctor) who had a cure for just about everything. I told him my problems. The said drop your pants. He pulled out a syringe big enough for a horse. Whatever it was the next day I was fine, except my ass was a bit sore from that needle..
Hypothermia is a nasty way to go

A friend and I were hunting in Eastern Africa. The day started out warm but by noon the clouds rolled in and the temp dropped about 25 degrees. Then the rain and sleet started. In 10 minutes we were both soaked and were at least 50 miles from camp. John hauled ass but that just made it worse. By the time we reached camp I was frozen. My body temp had dropped about 40 degrees and I couldn't talk and my vision was gone. It took us an hour or two with hot wet towels and sitting next to a wood stove to get my body temp back up.
Another great African hunting memory.
