Single Action Sixguns

I have always preferred singleaction sixguns. Even as a little boy. I am sure that my Dad had something to do with it. I was 4 years old in this photo.

The pistol is an original Civil War 1858 Remington .44 cap and ball sixgun.

I have owned and shot doubleactions and at the present time actually have a couple. I have also owned and shot semi-automatic guns and you could probably find a few around my place. However the singleaction is the main one you would see.

The only single shot pistol I ever owned was a .22. I had several that belonged to friends that I used for awhile. I as never taken with them.

Dominator in .44 Magnum.

It has been almost 79 years from that photo of me with the Remington cap and ball and the single action is still my preferred gun. I carry one most all the time.

I ain't saying the single action is better. I am saying, they are what I prefer.

Great picture and wise words. Even DA, I generally shoot SA

then another in 7-08 also a Contender in 6.5JDJ. I have long since sold them. I`ve taken a few head of game with single shots but really prefer to use a single or double action. I now own two SS handguns, a 260 Remington XP that I bought at a good price from a guy in Alaska plus a 10" 30-30 TC....[image][image]

There is something very pleasing about old Contenders

The .30-30 is a classic from way back. Everyone was in awe. A .30-30 in that?! It seemed a cannon. The reality, it lost quite a bit in 50% barrel loss. But it’s still cool.

Even when I venture with a single shot there is a wheelgun on my hip. 80% of the time it’s a SA.

That .44 Magnum on the 1911 grip looks like a handful!

I thought the “Dominator” kit was a cool idea. I still have the Pachmayr Hal Swiggett VHS tape somewhere. I wanted one, but never connected on a trade.

I can attest, a .378 GNR on the FA single action grip is quite the ride. Some 3,000 ft./lbs energy on that little grip! It can get in your face, even with the highly efficient grip. It’s literally a “Single-action” single shot!

I started my genuine shooting/loading fun (using my own earned money) around 1979 with a .44 Mag. Super Blackhawk. I should have gone .357 like my friends, but I have to do my own thing. I pay for it too with higher expense and flinching. There is still one in my collection. A SSK rebuilt package but I replaced the grip frame with a standard Blackhawk stainless one. It made it special enough it suited me. I also have a re-chambered and GNR engraved .44-40 Win. cylinder for it.

This one I post every once in a while. The grips are “BearPaw” that Taffin directed me to.

I had Hal Swiggett's 7mm-08 Dominator for awhile.

He loaned it to me with a bunch of ammo he loaded. He had 10 different loads that would stay under an inch at 100 yards. It was like shooting a laser beam!

I never took to it. It was accurate. But I like my .41 Magnum sixgun better.

I agree with your choice.

Must be because we're the same age. :-D

It's a misprint in what I wrote.

It should be .."It's been almost 76 years ..." from when that photo was taken.

Darn, that makes me older than you.

I regret not getting a bunch of those Dominator kits.

When they first came out the cost wasn't too bad.

I never bought one because of the horror stories regarding recoil.

I should have taken the chance and try one out. Knowing what I know now I would have bought a dozen of them.

In the photo of me shooting the Dominator

that .44 Magnum load was the old SSK 320 gr. cast bullet with a heavy load of H110. It recoiled pretty stoutly. In those days I thought that was fun. :-)

They look muzzle whippy like an XP

But cartridge selection and a good brake! .223, 7 BR, 7-08, even .308 would be ok.
