So frustrating, I want a "bolt action" AR

there is no reason it should cost $3,000. Even cheap semi-auto AR's shoot MOA. Why can't someone use all the AR parts, bottom half and fire control. Upper too, no gas block or tube, bolt parts, Just figure a way to alter the bolt or cast upper receiver. Or not, use the standard upper. Use all the other parts, as much as possible to keep it modular. It should cost less, not more! A co-worker just bought a good quality AR complete lower with Mag-pul parts for $150 out the door from a local dealer! Half the gun.

Someone, a while back, made a drop in special bolt that worked really well as a straight pull rig. But the bolt alone was about $300, and discontinued. Looked odd, like a Swiss Straight pull handle, but it seemed to work.

I currently have the task of turning some AR's into straight pull use (deactivated or removed gas systems) for special deer season use, in the straight wall case rounds. I'm trying to figure out what to tell the boys. They are going to do it no matter I help or not. Some cut off the gas tube except what sticks in the gas block, flipping it upside down. I'm thinking a custom solid pin blocking it off totally might be better. Some type of obvious mod will make the firearms legal to use in our state. Many guys are interested in making these temp. mods. It's a small order for a gunsmith to swap barrels / mags and change calibers on the platform. Takes maybe 30 minutes. Then, when modded, it won't throw your brass in the bushes either.

Even though a bit expensive ($125)

(For a fancy AR charging handle) I admire the design, sort of an L1A1 thing. For a "bolt" action type of hunting application it is innovative. There are several of this type but most cost more cost and are for restrictions in Europe etc.

My main question is WHY? For the amount of money

spent making a "hybrid" rifle a person could pick up a good used bolt gun that wouldn't raise questions with the Game & Fish should they come on you in the field. All these states are coming up with new regulations that makes a hunter spend more money so he can hunt. This is like the no lead bullet crap that California's politicians started several years ago.
Our own Game & Fish here in Arizona are hassling hunters in the field, telling them they need to use the no lead ammo. And this is not a law....yet. They just want to have full control of our guns, our seasons and our ammo. Hell, they even just put a season on Prarie Dogs here in Arizona.

But back to the bolt gun question there is absolutely no reason for a person to go to all the expense coming up with a bolt action AR-15 just to keep politicians happy. A bolt action AR-15 has no redeeming features including accuracy, easy of action, fool proof internals and so on. The hunters should realize that if they jump thru the hoops the state game & fish dept puts them thru now, what new regulations are they going to add on next year or the year after. Plus the hybrid guns will probably be "manufactured" in some wannabe gunsmith's garage.
I see no advantage to going thru the expense of having a bolt action AR-15 made when any hunter can pick up a good used bolt action at any gun shop and if he feels he has to kiss the Game & Fish's ass by using one of the new straight wall cartridges that are highly under powered, then go with any of several straight wall cartridges already on the market.
Sorry for the rant but this is just like the California crap of a few years back. The California hunters fell for their spiel then and are suffering with it today. Arizona's game & fish is seriously thinking of going with the no lead BS and it will stop a lot of folks from hunting if they do.

It’s a Southern thing, 30 more days of deer season

With something besides a muzzleloader. It HAS to be a straight wall round repeater or single shot. Gun stores are going nuts with all the “new” straight wall guns literally flying off the shelves. Shots around here are rarely over 100 yds and the straight walls do fine, have since 1870.

The .350 Legend rules. But for a strange reason. During COVID it was the only caliber overflowing on dealer shelves. Few knew what it was or had guns for it. Guys remember that! It’s the high pick now.

I’ve wanted a repeater AR for years for target and hunting. I don’t want my $3 each .458 SOCOM brass flying off into the poison ivy. I’m not interested the repeater AR for tactical, but practical. Plus it’s only half the gun, inexpensive, superb accuracy, able to be suppressed easily. So configured it would be utterly reliable as well. Here in the south the woods are going to be filled, early in season, with all sorts of straight-wall cartridge hunters. Whitetails be warned.

Dave Manson’s proprietary .50 straight wall for the short action Remington 700. HHC circa 2019? Based on the .375 UM case. A real blaster.

I just read the regs.

There are many lever, pump, single shot, and a couple bolt actions already chambered in (over .30 caliber) straight wall cartridges. To me, it seems like a lot of work and expense for no gain.

I grew up hunting in the South. They don't get much

more Southern than me and I never had to do silly stuff like this straight wall crap. I had plenty of time to get my deer using handguns and they didn't have to be any special handgun cartridges. In fact I very seldom didn't get my limit of deer and it may be different these days but back then I could get 4 deer a day during the gun season using my handguns. Tennessee must be different from Arkansas in the rules department.
