the cartridge actually goes in the barrel. The "cylinder" is just a block that seals off the chamber in the barrel. I think the gun shown in the picture is my old Hawkeye. To load the gun you release the lock on the left side of the block (AKA cylinder), roll the block to the left, drop the entire cartridge down in the barrel and close the block. So there are no chamber walls. The walls are the sides of the barrel and as I mentioned for anything bigger than a 256 Winchester the barrels would have to be much bigger.
