That was 100 yrs. ago. Handgunning in total infancy

The advancements in propellants and bullet designs were not there as we understand it today. They were discovering things as they lived out the adventures. Goerg came some 25-30 yrs. later and greatly improved on the ideas and knowledge of bullet performance and use of the .357 on his beloved high altitude sheep. (by then favoring the Colt Python) Plus Wesson probably didn't write about the moose he shot in the arse, tracked 10 miles, and lost (my story but plausible). Things were of a different mind and attitude back then too. Manly, men would never admit weakness or anything less than complete victory in print! Just not done. (By 99.9%)

The long barrel N-frame does maximize the performance and hit probability. That little 158 running a real 1500+ will do most chores if you hit your mark. It can surprise.

Some other guys about the same time "invented" the 10mm Magnum by reaming out SAA cylinders for a shortened .401 WSL case and plucking it in a .38 WCF frame and barrel. But that was not mainstream or marketable. The old fix sighted Cowboy gun was not fancy or modern enough to attract much attention. The big DA revolver with adjustable sights was the practical future.

D.B. Wesson was a good showman, promoter, and common soul adventurer. The .357 Magnum is still holding it's own in like hands.
